Designed to break down disciplinary silos, the Hacking Health Camp is now recognized as one of the world’s largest health hackathons. Its concept is both simple and powerful: turning innovative ideas into tangible prototypes, capable of addressing today’s healthcare challenges, in just 50 hours. Since its launch in 2014, the event has led to the creation of hundreds of projects, several of which have grown into leading startups, including Pixacare and Hypno VR.

Strasbourg students in the spotlight

The 2026 edition took place from March 20 to 22 at the Strasbourg Faculty of Medicine. Over three days, participants worked in multidisciplinary teams to tackle real-world challenges, exploring topics ranging from chronic disease management to artificial intelligence in healthcare.

Among the award-winning projects in 2026 were two initiatives led by students from the University of Strasbourg:

MediSignes Urgence, led by a student of EM Strasbourg, won the Best Patient Solution award. It introduces a tool designed to facilitate communication between healthcare providers and patients in emergency situations, particularly in cases involving language barriers or disabilities, improving both the quality and speed of care.

Another award-winning project, REPER (Quest for Health prize), follows the same goal of improving care pathways. Developed by a multidisciplinary Strasbourg-based team of pharmacology students and a developer from Télécom Physique Strasbourg, it aims to create a tool enabling pharmacists to quickly identify potential drug interactions in elderly patients, helping to prevent hospitalizations.

Beyond these projects, other award-winning initiatives reflect the diversity of innovations emerging from HHC, such as PRIORA, a platform designed to broaden access to adaptive clinical trials and support the advancement of precision medicine.

Crédit photo : Hacking Health Camp

Alsace, a hub of collaborative innovation

Beyond its tangible outcomes, projects and startups, the Hacking Health Camp showcases the strength of Alsace’s life sciences ecosystem, which includes nearly 20,000 healthcare professionals, 14,000 students, and around 450 companies. Notable examples include:

The University of Strasbourg, its schools, and partners, which train thousands of students each year in healthcare, digital technologies, and engineering, fostering highly sought-after hybrid skill sets in healthtech.

The trinational BioValley cluster, unique in Europe, which promotes collaboration between French, German, and Swiss stakeholders around key areas such as innovative therapies, diagnostics, and e-health.

The Nextmed campus, which brings together researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs, and industry players in a single location to shape the future of healthcare, illustrating the region’s ability to turn ideas into real-world innovations.

Quest for Health, the Grand Est Region’s health incubator, specializing in biotech, medtech, and e-health startups. Notable companies from this program include Spartha Medical, RDS, and Hypno VR: three rising stars in biomedical research.

The pH8, a business incubator founded in 2012 and dedicated exclusively to startups in healthcare, new technologies, and creative industries. It currently hosts over 30 companies, including Doctolib, Firalis, and Kwit.

Learn more about it: Business facilities and incubators in Alsace

By bringing together an international community around health innovation each year, the Hacking Health Camp underscores the role of Strasbourg and Alsace as major players in healthtech in Europe and globally. More than just an event, it reflects a dynamic ecosystem where students, researchers, and entrepreneurs come together to shape the medicine of tomorrow. See you in March 2027 for the next edition!

L’article Hacking Health Camp: Strasbourg at the heart of health innovation est apparu en premier sur Imagine Alsace.

Voileau – ADT

Alsatian products represent 8.6% of super- and hypermarkets food purchases in the Bas-Rhin and 7.8% in the Haut-Rhin, compared with a national average of 2.8%. In practical terms, nearly one out of every ten food items consumed in Alsace comes from a local supply chain.

This strong performance highlights both the deep attachment of residents to their region and the maturity of a well-structured agri-food ecosystem able to meet sustained demand.

A long-established agri-food strength

Alsace draws on a long tradition of agriculture and gastronomy, now supported by a powerful and innovative agri-food sector, the region’s leading industry.

More than 1,000 agricultural and food companies operate in Alsace, generating over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs and covering the entire value chain from production to processing. Agricultural land accounts for nearly 40% of the territory, reflecting the enduring importance of this sector.

This strong foundation is complemented by a well-recognized culinary culture, built on iconic regional specialties and time-honored expertise.

A remarkable range of products

A key feature of Alsace is the exceptional variety of its food production, spanning all categories:

wines, beers, and both artisanal and industrial beverages

meats, cured products, and prepared specialties

dairy and cheese products

locally sourced fruits and vegetables

delicatessen items, pastries, chocolate, and processed foods

This diversity enables a complete local offering, from aperitif to digestif, a unique characteristic in France. It also supports short supply chains and strengthens local food self-reliance.

Crédit photo : cdumoulin.com – ADT

Labels that highlight the sector

This offering is partly structured around two major labels: “Savourez l’Alsace” and “Savourez l’Alsace avec l’agriculture locale.” They certify product origin and showcase the expertise of local businesses while making it easier for consumers to identify them.

The first label promotes products processed locally in Alsace. The second applies stricter requirements, with 100% Alsatian origin for raw products and at least 80% local ingredients for processed items.

Together, these initiatives cover more than 5,000 product lines and several hundred companies, supporting short supply chains, increasing producer visibility, and driving value creation in the region.

A well-regarded culinary scene

The strength of the agri-food ecosystem is reflected in the quality of Alsace’s dining scene. In 2026, the region counts 34 Michelin-starred restaurants, including six with two stars.

This high concentration, especially relative to population size, ranks Alsace among France’s leading gastronomic regions. It is supported by chefs who prioritize local ingredients and maintain close ties with producers.

Beyond fine dining, Alsace offers a broad spectrum of venues, from traditional winstubs to modern restaurants, enriching the overall culinary experience.

Crédit photo : Hostellerie La Cheneaudière & Spa – Jo Pesendorfer – ADT

Developing future talent

Alsace’s excellence in food professions is also supported by a well-organized and highly regarded training network.

The Alexandre Dumas hospitality school in Illkirch-Graffenstaden is a national benchmark, within a wider system that includes:

the CEFPPA Adrien Zeller in Illkirch-Graffenstaden, specializing in apprenticeship-based hospitality training

the hospitality training center (CFA) in Colmar

the Centre-Alsace Marcel Rudloff CFA in Colmar

the Chamber of Trades CFAs in Eschau, Mulhouse, and Haguenau, covering fields such as butchery, charcuterie, baking, and pastry

GRETA-CFA Alsace programs offering qualifications from CAP to vocational high school level in food-related trades

These institutions pass on expertise and train a large number of qualified professionals each year, working closely with local companies.

A sustainable and appealing model

Alsace stands out for a food system built on proximity, quality, and variety. Residents demonstrate their commitment through levels of local product consumption nearly three times the national average, along with strong loyalty to regional brands and producers.

This vitality enhances quality of life, with access to fresh, traceable products from short supply chains, a rich culinary offering, and a strong cultural identity.

For businesses, it provides a stable, well-structured, and innovative environment. For visitors and newcomers, it offers a genuine promise of quality living, where heritage, economy, and lifestyle come together.

From vineyards and fine restaurants to farmers’ markets and recognized expertise, Alsace presents an attractive and authentic setting, ideal for discovery… and maybe for settling down?

L’article Alsace, a leader in local food and a destination for food lovers est apparu en premier sur Imagine Alsace.

As the leading industrial sector in Alsace, the agri-food industry includes over 1,000 companies and 25,000 jobs across the region.

It is currently undergoing significant shifts, including rising raw material and energy costs, increasing pressure on margins, stricter regulatory requirements, and changing consumer expectations.

The call for expressions of interest introduced by ADEME and the Region supports companies seeking to rethink their business models. It draws on the economy of functionality and cooperation, which focuses on creating value through use, performance, and collaboration between stakeholders.

Substantial public funding

The State and the Grand Est Region back this initiative with grants for studies and advisory services.

Funding rates range from 60% to 80% depending on company size.

Indicatively:

diagnostic studies can receive between €5,000 and €40,000,

strategic support can amount to as much as €100,000.

These grants are deliberately allocated before any capital investment, in order to maximize the effectiveness of future projects.

Information and applications:

Digital sector: accelerating eco-design for products and services

A key environmental and economic issue

The digital sector now accounts for a significant share of environmental impacts due to its intensive use of resources and energy. It is responsible for nearly 5% of total greenhouse gas emissions in France.

To address these challenges, the dedicated call for expressions of interest promotes the wider adoption of eco-design approaches, reducing impacts across the entire life cycle of products and services while enhancing business competitiveness.

The objective is to position the Grand Est as a leading region in sustainable digital practices.

Targeted financial support

Selected projects receive ADEME funding to cover studies and support measures:

up to €50,000 for diagnostic phases,

up to €100,000 for implementation,

along with additional support for internal resources involved in the project.

Funding levels typically range from 60% to 80% depending on company size.

As with the previous scheme, this support focuses on studies and engineering services to help structure solid projects before any investment is made.

Information and applications:

An opportunity for companies in Alsace

Together, these two calls for expressions of interest provide companies in Alsace with a practical opportunity to anticipate sector developments, improve their resilience, and adopt more sustainable business models.

By combining expert support with significant public funding, they help secure strategic projects and accelerate ongoing transitions.

In a region known for the strength of its economic fabric and its commitment to innovation, these initiatives contribute to building a more sustainable and competitive economy firmly rooted in its local ecosystem.

L’article Two calls for expressions of interest to support local business transitions est apparu en premier sur Imagine Alsace.

In response to the climate emergency and the need to enhance the industrial competitiveness of local economies, the energy transition has become a strategic priority. In Alsace, a historically industrial region with a strong European outlook, this ambition is taking shape through major structuring initiatives, including the recently launched HySyn project.

Officially initiated at the end of March 2026 by CCI Grand Est alongside 26 French, German and Swiss partners following two years of preparatory work, this cross-border initiative seeks to establish a robust local hydrogen sector in support of industrial decarbonization and European energy sovereignty.

Crédit photo : F. Zvardon

Decarbonized hydrogen as a driver of industrial transformation

Industry remains a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, largely due to its highly energy-intensive processes. In this context, decarbonized hydrogen is emerging as an indispensable complement to electrification, particularly for industrial applications that are difficult to replace. When produced from renewable or low-carbon energy sources, hydrogen offers a significant reduction in emissions while strengthening the security of energy supply.

Within this framework, CCI Grand Est supports companies in identifying and deploying tailored decarbonization solutions, positioning hydrogen among the key energy carriers of the future. This approach relies on a comprehensive vision of the transition, balancing economic performance, industrial competitiveness and environmental responsibility.

HySyn, a structuring cross-border initiative

HySyn is fully aligned with this momentum. Backed by a €3.3 million budget and supported by the Upper Rhine Interreg program, the project brings together 26 partners from France, Germany and Switzerland, including industrial clusters, universities and research centers, and public authorities, around a shared objective: the development of a coherent and operational hydrogen ecosystem at the cross-border level. This European dimension is a major asset, enabling the sharing of expertise, the pooling of infrastructure and the creation of markets at a meaningful scale.

The project focuses in particular on assessing industrial needs, identifying opportunities for green hydrogen production and use, and addressing the technical, economic and regulatory barriers that continue to hinder its deployment. While primarily targeting industrial and logistics stakeholders, HySyn also integrates mobility and spatial planning considerations.

Key partners at the core of the Alsatian ecosystem

The success of HySyn is built on close collaboration between institutional, economic and technical actors. One of its key partners is the Port de Strasbourg, a strategic player in the energy transition and a leading logistics hub on the Rhine. Thanks to its central role in transport and inland waterway logistics in the Upper Rhine area, the Port positions itself as a pivotal site for the analysis and development of hydrogen solutions for industrial applications. Its involvement includes conducting studies and analyses (production potential, transport and supply, cross-border flows, etc.) as well as supporting the local ecosystem through the development and dissemination of methodological tools and awareness-raising actions targeting its stakeholders.

The Véhicule du Futur innovation cluster is also deeply engaged in the project. As a recognized player in decarbonization, long-standing coordinator of the Grand Est hydrogen sector and contributor to several innovative cross-border initiatives, it will play a key role in connecting and mobilizing actors across the ecosystem.

Alongside these flagship organizations, numerous local authorities, development agencies, clusters and private companies are involved, highlighting Alsace’s ability to unite a wide range of stakeholders around forward-looking initiatives.

Energy sovereignty and territorial attractiveness

Beyond its contribution to decarbonization, HySyn responds to the growing challenge of energy sovereignty. Local production of decarbonized energy, secure supply chains and reduced reliance on imported fossil fuels are critical levers of resilience for both territories and businesses. In an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment, energy autonomy is becoming a decisive factor for competitiveness and attractiveness.

By supporting the development of a local and cross-border hydrogen sector, Alsace reaffirms its ambition to remain an innovative, open and sustainable industrial region. HySyn reflects this shared ambition: preparing for the energy future, supporting companies through their transition and strengthening Alsace’s role as a provider of solutions at the heart of Europe.

L’article HySyn: Alsace builds a decarbonized and sovereign hydrogen sector est apparu en premier sur Imagine Alsace.

Located in Mulhouse’s Fonderie district and inaugurated in 2019, KMØ (pronounced KM-zero) has become one of Alsace’s flagship hubs for digital innovation. Set within the former buildings of the Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques (SACM), this 11,500 m² site represents a major industrial reconversion project that blends heritage preservation with technological ambition.

Crédit photo : KMØ

A historic site transformed into an innovation hub

KMØ is rooted in Mulhouse’s industrial heritage. It stands on the former departure station of the world’s first international railway line (Mulhouse–Basel, 1841), from which it also takes its name. The restored site now provides a distinctive setting where start-ups, industrial players, students and public organisations come together.

The conversion into a digital hub was made possible through large-scale renovation work supported notably by European funds (ERDF), creating training facilities, office spaces, a TechLab and an environment designed to foster innovative projects.

A dynamic ecosystem dedicated to businesses

The mission of KMØ is to bring industry, digital technology, talent and innovators as close together as possible, symbolically reducing the distance between them to “zero”. This ambition is reflected in a multidisciplinary ecosystem that hosts over 70 companies from France, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium, alongside 25 technical training programs and several support structures.

Each day, nearly 1,100 people (entrepreneurs, industrial managers, engineers and students) occupy the site and collaborate in a setting designed to encourage interaction, cross-disciplinary projects and open innovation. Often described as a “giant coffee machine”, KMØ is valued for its ability to connect people and ideas. It brings together:

technology start-ups,

industrial companies engaged in digital transformation,

incubators and accelerators (Le Village by CA, Semia),

training institutions (Ecole 42, Epitech, PHG Academy),

Industry 4.0 demonstrators and a fablab,

professional organisations representing industrial actors committed to digital transition.

The hub maintains an occupancy rate above 99%, with more than 40 resident companies and nearly 600 students integrated into its daily operations. Expansion work is underway to increase its capacity even further.

A strategic location at the centre of the Upper Rhine region

Mulhouse’s ideal position at the crossroads of France, Germany and Switzerland gives KMØ a strong cross-border advantage. The hub naturally supports international collaboration, strengthened by the presence of companies from several European countries and by major joint projects with nearby metropolitan areas such as Basel, Freiburg, Strasbourg and Colmar.

This Upper Rhine location enhances the visibility of Alsace’s digital excellence and connects it to a network of advanced industrial sectors including microtechnology, mobility technologies, industrial systems and cybersecurity.

A valuable asset for businesses: collaboration, visibility and growth

Companies based at KMØ benefit from:

a collaborative environment where partners, potential clients and emerging talent can be easily identified,

immediate proximity to laboratories and training institutions, supporting recruitment,

modern facilities including office spaces, event venues, a TechLab and shared services,

privileged access to regional and cross-border innovation networks (French Tech, clusters, European programs),

integration into a fast-growing ecosystem, with future extensions planned in Belfort, Colmar and Porrentruy.

A showcase for Alsace’s industrial renewal

By revitalising a landmark industrial site and bringing together the region’s digital and industrial communities, KMØ embodies the ambition of Alsace: to combine innovation, heritage and international reach.

At the heart of a dynamic and connected cross-border region, KMØ aims to act as a true starting point, a “kilometre zero”, for companies seeking to launch or accelerate their digital and industrial projects.

Established in 1983 to bring academic research closer to industry, it has grown into a flagship technopole, home to innovative companies, research centers, higher education institutions and support organizations.

Parc d’innovation d’Illkirch – Crédit photo : ADIRA

Today, more than one hundred entities operate within the park, and over 7,000 people come every day to work or study. Spanning nearly 170 hectares, the site offers an outstanding environment, combining state-of-the-art facilities, business services and immediate access to protected natural areas.

Connecting talent, research and innovation

The PII is distinguished by a comprehensive ecosystem that supports innovation in all its dimensions. It fosters the development:

of collaborative R&D and technology transfer, supported by institutions such as the University of Strasbourg, SATT Conectus and the BioValley France cluster;

of strategic technology sectors, including health, biotechnology, digital technologies, mobility and environmental innovation.

The park is also home to leading companies such as Transgene, Biosynex, ABL Europe and Domain Therapeutics, and plays a structuring role for innovation in Alsace and the cross-border region, notably through the EUCOR network linking five major Upper Rhine universities.

A year-round program of events

The PII’s dynamism is reflected in a diverse and extensive event agenda, spanning research, entrepreneurship, training and technological innovation. Among the many upcoming spring events, here are some of the highlights.

Hacking Health Camp 2026, 20-22 March

By bringing together academic talent, support organizations, startups, major corporations and international institutions on a single site, the Innovation Park acts as a key accelerator of economic momentum in Strasbourg and the wider Alsace region. Its events, which punctuate the year and encourage exchanges, reflect the creative and collaborative spirit that drives Alsace.

L’article Strasbourg Innovation Park: a strategic catalyst for Alsace est apparu en premier sur Imagine Alsace.

In 2025, the Grand Est Region ranked third among the most attractive regions in France, with 198 foreign investment decisions representing 4,896 jobs created or maintained and nearly 4 billion euros invested. Industrial projects play a leading role in this momentum, accounting for 45% of all decisions and 77% of projected jobs.

Although Alsace covers less than 15% of the Grand Est’s total area, it captures almost half of all foreign investment decisions, with 94 projects. Supported by more than 800 foreign-owned companies employing tens of thousands of people locally, the region once again demonstrates its ability to host, support and develop major international investments.

Crédit photo : ADIRA

A regional and cross-border ecosystem

Germany remains the leading investor in Alsace, accounting for 30% of all projects, followed by other major economic partners such as the United States, Belgium and Switzerland. This diversity reflects the confidence placed in our region and its capacity to address a wide range of industrial and technological needs.

This solid foundation is strengthened by a coordinated ecosystem bringing together all regional stakeholders: ADIRA, the Grand Est Region, Grand Est Développement, the French State through Business France, local authorities and an extensive network of local partners. Their combined efforts help facilitate new business locations, support the expansion of existing sites and assist recovery or takeover projects when foreign investment offers a long-term solution.

Some examples of recent investments

Among the projects recently implemented in Alsace are:

Sartorius Polyplus

The German biotechnology group is investing 35 million euros in its Illkirch-Graffenstaden production site, enabling a fivefold increase in its capacity to produce DNA/RNA transfection reagents and plasmids. The investment will lead to the creation of 50 to 100 jobs.

Elanco

The American animal health specialist has committed 50 million euros to its site in Huningue, which will become the world’s sole producer of two new medicines for animal health professionals across several continents. The project reflects the group’s trust in its Alsace subsidiary.

Loadhog

The British manufacturer of plastic containers for logistics is investing 11 million euros in the construction of a 5,000 m² production site in Obernai. Previously dedicated only to the marketing of products made in Great Britain, the site will now host Loadhog’s first international factory. Around thirty jobs will be created as part of the investment.

Polypeptide

The Swedish group, specialised in developing and manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients, is investing 25 million euros to expand its production site located in the Port of Strasbourg. The facility’s production capacity will be doubled, with around thirty new jobs expected in 2026.

Mars

The American agri-food leader announced in 2025 an investment of 43 million euros across its four sites in Alsace (Haguenau, Steinbourg, Ernolsheim-sur-Bruche and Biesheim). The objective is to modernise and digitalise the facilities, support innovation, accelerate the Net Zero transition and consolidate local employment.

Amcor

The Australian packaging solutions group is investing 13 million euros in its Ungersheim site, which specialises in printing cigarette packs for export. The investment will finance a fourth production line and create 25 jobs.

Parc d’Innovation d’Illkirch – Crédit photo : ADIRA

These developments further enhance the overall attractiveness of the region and highlight its ability to provide competitive land, industrial and technological solutions.

Alsace is consolidating a development path oriented toward industry, energy transition, innovation and European openness. Together, these dynamics form a strong foundation for balanced, sustainable and internationally driven growth.

L’article Foreign investment 2025: Alsace confirms its attractiveness est apparu en premier sur Imagine Alsace.

IETES’ mandate responds to a well-established reality: in France, the health sector is estimated to account for about 8% of national greenhouse gas emissions, with the largest share tied to purchases of medicines and medical devices.

Strasbourg, the European capital, brings together a rare combination of assets: a leading university hospital, the Nextmed health innovation campus, world-class centers such as IRCAD, the ph8 health incubator, and an export-oriented pharmaceutical manufacturing base. The region also benefits from the significant economic footprint of Alsace’s pharmaceutical industry, with production sites operated by several global players.

This proximity enables co-design between clinicians, engineers and industry, speeds up real-world evaluation and creates optimal conditions for the ecological transformation of healthcare, from manufacturing sites to operating rooms.

A project anchored at Nextmed and connected to innovators

IETES is embedded in the Nextmed ecosystem, the European campus for medical technologies, which brings together clinicians, researchers, entrepreneurs and patients within the Strasbourg university hospitals. The site’s purpose is to shorten the path from innovation to clinical use and to create skilled jobs. Being located next to the specialized ph8 incubator, dedicated to health start-ups, also facilitates integrating eco-design early in both industrial and clinical projects.

The institute’s program is organized around six pillars: methodological research, training for healthcare professionals and industry, support for healthcare organizations, support for innovation, provision of a document and data platform, and coordination of a European network.

A location that leverages leading medical players

The institute was launched by eight partners: the health eco-responsibility collective (CERES), the Strasbourg anesthesia and intensive care association (ASAR), Acting sustainably in health in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (ADSNA), Mines Paris-PSL, the school of advanced studies in public health (EHESP), the French hospital federation (FHF), FEHAP, and the Hospital procurement network RESAH. Together, they aim to deliver robust methods and data for decision-makers and practitioners.

IETES’ presence in Alsace builds on a territory internationally recognized for life sciences. Created in 1994 within the Strasbourg university hospitals, IRCAD remains a global reference in training and research for minimally invasive and robotic surgery, with leading platforms and programs that share expertise worldwide.

Nextmed has brought new health research facilities online, including the eXplora building, and unites international-caliber structures with a dense ecosystem of medtech and e-health start-ups, helping move from prototype to clinical impact more quickly. The campus also hosts the eastern regional delegation of the national institute of health and medical research (Inserm).

IRCAD – Crédit photo : F. Zvardon

This strong technological and academic-hospital base is complemented by a particularly active pharmaceutical industry in Alsace, a key lever for the transition ahead: Lilly, Novartis, Octapharma, Biosynex…

This industrial base, combined with clinical and academic capabilities, is an asset for designing, testing and scaling more resource-efficient practices in procurement, eco-design and manufacturing: a priority given the sizable contribution of health products to the sector’s overall footprint.

Finally, Strasbourg is home to the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines (EDQM) under the Council of Europe, commonly known as the European pharmacopoeia. It develops Europe-wide standards for medicine manufacturing, blood transfusion, organ, tissue and cell transplantation, and consumer health protection.

Looking ahead

With IETES, Strasbourg and Alsace are consolidating their role as a European hub for developing and scaling health solutions that are more resource-efficient, measurable and reproducible. The goal is to make the region a credible demonstrator of the ecological transition in health, supported by training and partnerships across industry and hospitals, for the benefit of patients, health sovereignty and the climate.

L’article Organizing the health sector’s ecological transition in Alsace est apparu en premier sur Imagine Alsace.
