The Pioneers
The pioneering spirit in Alsace reveals itself in innovative ways.
Let’s begin by the most famous monument in America, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi from Colmar created the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to America.
Hervé This invented molecular cuisine here!
Dr Albert Schweitzer was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1952 crowning his life of humanitarian efforts in Africa.
4 Nobel prizes for Chemistry have been won here including Jean-Marie Lehn in 1987.
Other famous scientists such as Louis Pasteur, and Marguerite Perey, the first female member of the Academy of Science, worked here.

Great Chefs
A gastronomic region ‘par excellence’, Alsace is the cradle of numerous great chefs. It’s impossible to list them all, but to give you a few examples: Pierre Hermé who revolutionized the art of macaroon baking the world over, Jean Joho, the chef at the “l’Everest” in Chicago and co-founder of the Corner Bakery, the Haeberlin family, Chef at “l’Auberge de l’Ill” in Alsace, a 3-star restaurant spreading its best practices as far as Japan, and Hubert Keller, Chef at “la Fleur de Lys” in San Francisco and head of an original chain of luxury burgers, the Burger Bar, a phenomenal success in the US! Another exporter of culinary talent is Christine Ferber, a specialist of preserves and pastries from Alsace.
Sports Heros
There are also sports champions from Alsace: Sébastien Loeb, five time rally world champion, Arsène Wenger, elected best soccer coach by the English Premiership league, Thierry Omeyer, two-time world champion in handball and 2008 Olympic champion. Three world-class swimmers, including Amaury Leveaux, a medal winner at the Games in Beijing, swim for the Mulhouse swim club.
